The best toys for 4-year-olds are the ones that capture their boundless curiosity and imagination while supporting all the new skills they’re learning. At this age, kids are bursting with creativity, energy, and a growing sense of independence. Play is their favorite way to explore the world — whether they’re whipping up pretend meals, building towering castles, or racing around the backyard.
What makes this stage so magical is how much learning happens through play. The right open-ended toys for 4-year-olds do more than entertain; they invite children to experiment, pretend, and problem-solve in ways that feel joyful and natural. When a toy sparks imagination and offers just the right challenge, it becomes more than playtime — it becomes a stepping stone for growth and discovery.
If you’d rather skip straight to the fun, you can jump ahead to our hand-picked list of engaging toys for 4-year-olds, or choose from the table of contents below. But if you’d like to understand why certain toys shine at this age — and how the right closed-end and open-ended toys for 4-year-olds can support your child’s development — read on for a closer look at the types of toys that truly help kids learn and grow.
What Makes Toys for 4-Year-Olds Special?
At age four, children are in the thick of what psychologists call the “preoperational stage” of cognitive development (Jean Piaget’s term). Their brains are busy making connections — they’re learning to use symbols, play pretend, and explore cause-and-effect thinking. This means toys that support storytelling, role play, and creative building are especially powerful.
👯Socially, 4-year-olds are moving into cooperative play. They’re starting to play with others instead of just alongside them. Board games with simple rules, dress-up costumes for group make-believe, or toys that involve taking turns can help them practice sharing, empathy, and teamwork.
🛝Physically, they’re refining both gross and fine motor skills. Running, climbing, hopping, and balancing are all in their wheelhouse now, so toys that get them moving (like balance bikes or balls) are wonderful. At the same time, their little fingers are gaining dexterity, so puzzles, craft kits, and LEGO bricks become more satisfying.
🙂Emotionally, 4-year-olds are learning how to name feelings and manage frustration. Pretend play and storytelling toys are invaluable here, giving children safe ways to explore big emotions.
Learning Through Play
As Dr. Kathryn Hirsh-Pasek, a developmental psychologist at Temple University, explains: “Play is not a break from learning — it’s the way young children learn. Through play, children develop the skills they need for success in school and life: collaboration, communication, content, critical thinking, creative innovation, and confidence.”
When we choose thoughtful toys for 4-year-olds, we’re not just filling the toy box — we’re giving them tools to grow in every part of life.
Now that we’ve looked at how play supports a child’s growth, let’s talk about the different kinds of toys for 4-year-olds that shine at this stage. From imaginative role-play sets to active outdoor gear and creative art supplies, each category of toy helps children practice important skills while having fun. Below, we’ll explore the types of both closed and open-ended toys for 4-year-olds that spark curiosity, build confidence, and keep playtime joyful.
On a personal note, when my kids were 4, my son loved building sets, vehicle toys, and play and action figures. My daughters loved building blocks, dollhouses, and playing dress-up. So of course, you’ll find some of these in our favorite picks below!

1. Imaginative Play Toys for 4-Year-Olds🎠
Four-year-olds are natural storytellers. They love stepping into new roles and creating entire worlds out of thin air. Dress-up clothes, dollhouses, play kitchens, and figure and vehicle play sets are wonderful open-ended toys for 4-year-olds because they let children take the lead. Through make-believe, kids practice problem-solving, empathy, and communication — all while having an absolute blast. Here are ours, and other parent’s favorites in this category.
Kidkraft Ultimate Corner Wooden Play Kitchen
KidKraft Ultimate Corner Wooden Kitchen
A play kitchen is one of my favorite open-ended toys for 4-year-olds to inspire their imaginations. It’s a kitchen, a drive-thru, a restaurant, a bakery, a coffee shop—the possibilities are endless. This wooden kitchen by Kidkraft is a parent favorite, for it’s generous counter and storage space, realistic look, and lights and sounds that enchant children and add to their pretend play experience. With a counter height of 21″, it’s the perfect height for a 4-year-old, yet tall enough to grow with your child.

Role-Play Costumes
Preschoolers love dressing up and playing pretend in a variety of roles. The costume sets linked below have great reviews and come 3 in a package, with all the accessories. For more fairy tale role playing, I love this princess costume, complete with jewelry and tiara. And finally, I have to mention the Melissa & Doug costumes, because they are so well-made and there’s a large variety of them. they are a bit pricier but excellent quality.

Hot Wheels Cars & GarageTrack Set
If you haven’t already introduced your child to Hot Wheels and other car and track sets, 4-years-old is a great age to do it. Choose sets without launchers that require muscle to pull back so your child can operate them without assistance. Most sets have the ability to add tracks and launchers on to them later, when your child is older. We like this set of 10 cars and trucks to get started, and this Mega Garage Playset, with plenty of corkscrew turns for exciting play. There’s connection points on the bottom of it to add on tracks later too.

PLAYMOBIL Sets
PLAYMOBIL playsets are another favorite toy for 4-year-olds. These charming, high-quality building and play toys inspire creativity and story-telling in kids from toddlers to 6 or 7 years old. Be warned though—they do have small parts. This pirate set features a cannon that really “fires” and all sorts of other fun details and accessories. I’ve linked a couple of the smaller sets below too—there are so many cute ones to choose from.

Educational Insights Bolt Buddies
Educational Insights make imaginative, creative toys for preschoolers and in 2020 they came out with their “Design & Drill Bolt Buddies” toys. These popular sets give kids the tools to build and take apart all kinds of vehicles. This rocket kit is one of their most popular sets. Kids can take a real, working, kid-safe drill and build their own rocket, then pop in the included play figures and take it for a spin in space.
The really fun thing about this toy is it can be taken apart and rebuilt multiple times AND the packaging turns into a space playset to be used with the toys. All of their sets have this fun feature, actually, which is a great way to recycle and reuse! This toy checks the boxes as a pretend-play toy, as well as a building toy, which I love. You can check out all of the Design & Drill Bolt Buddies toys here.

2. Active Play Toys for 4-Year-Olds🛝
If you’ve ever spent a day with a 4-year-old, you know their energy seems endless! This is the perfect age for toys that get them moving and help build coordination. Balance bikes, scooters, jump ropes, and balls give kids the chance to run, climb, hop, and explore. Active toys for 4-year-olds not only support healthy bodies, they also help children build confidence in what their growing bodies can do. Here’s our favorite toys for 4-year-olds in this category.
Micro Mini Deluxe Scooter
Micro scooters are 3-wheeled scooters that kids can steer by leaning, making them great for young kids to develop balance and coordination. They hold up to 110 pounds, but are very lightweight and easy for preschoolers to operate. The handle bar is adjustable, which parents love because it grows with your child. Reviewers say their kids love it, especially at night when the wheels light up. The Micro Mini is for ages 2-5. They have a regular Micro for ages 5-12, worth checking out for older kids.

EzyRoller Classic Ride-On Scooter
EzyRoller Classic Ride on Scooter
The EzyRoller scooter has been on our top toy list for preschoolers for a few years now. It’s a unique sit-down ride-on toy where kids propel it forward using alternating leg movements with the foot bar. It comes with 2 extender bars, so it can grow with your child and bring many years of outdoor active fun. Some reviewers used it indoors on hard surfaces, like a gymnasium floor. Kids love it and it holds up to 150 pounds, so some parents enjoyed racing their kids on them.

Flybar Foam Pogo Jumper
I bought this jumper for my 3-year-old granddaughter, but she’s just a bit short to use it effectively—it will be a perfect active toy for when she’s 4-years-old. Me and my teens used it though, and it’s great fun! Kids can use it indoors or out, and it makes an only slightly annoying squeek with every jump, which really just makes me laugh, and my granddaughter gets a huge kick out of it. It holds up to 250 pounds so kids and kidults of all ages can jump around on it and let off some steam.

Pancake Pile-Up Game
The Panckae Pile-Up game by Educational Insights is just as fun as it sounds. It’s a relay game where preschoolers compete to fill their “pancake orders” accurately in the shortest amount of time. This active game can be played indoors or out and involves a lot of running back and forth (better to wear the little tornados out!), but also some reasoning and fine motor skills.
Preschoolers learn balance and coordination as they try not to drop the pancakes on the spatula, and have to match the stack to the picture on the order card. It’s a great party game, or fun for just 2 siblings to play together. It’s a fun toy for 4 year-olds that’s been around a few years now and is still a parent and kid favorite.

B. toys Balance Beam for Kids
The B. toys balance beam is so much more than a balance beam—it’s stepping stones, it’s a musical game, it challenges kids’ reasoning abilities as they try to configure it in new ways. There’s a music player with it, and kids can walk the beam and then stop when the music stops and try to keep their balance. What’s great about it is how versatile it is. they can use the beams and stones together or separate and play with it with or without music. Older kids like it too, so it’s definitely not a one-and-done toy—families will get a few years use out of this one.

3. Building and Problem Solving Toys for 4-Year-Olds 💡
Likee Open-Ended Wooden Shape Puzzles
LiKee Open Ended Wooden Shape Puzzle
This wooden shapes puzzle challenges preschooler’s logic, shape, and color recognition skills as they try to recreate pictures on cards with the wooden shapes. It’s the perfect “quiet time” activity and parents report it keeps their 4-year-olds occupied for a little while at least. Kids can use their creativity and form new objects or try to recreate the things around them, if they get bored of the cards. Older kids like it too, so it’s a good one for younger kids and older siblings to play together.

Picasso Tiles Marble Run Car Race
PicassoTiles 3-in-1 Marble Run Car Race
Picasso Tiles are similar to MAGNA-TILES, but in my opinion, are more versatile. Kids can build simple structures with these or kick it up a notch and custom build an epic track, using tubes, slides, and track-like pieces. They can make it a marble run or a track for cars, or both at the same time (cars and marbles included)! This is a wonderful building toy for 4-year-olds to challenge their logical thinking, fine motor skills, and imagination, even teaching early engineering concepts. It’s another toy that’s perfect for younger kids and older kids to play together too.

Fisher-Price Code ‘n Learn Kinderbot
Code ‘n Learn Kinderbot

The Code ‘n Learn Kinderbot is brand new this year and already getting great feedback. This colorful little guy helps prepare young ones for Kindergarten by teaching numbers, shapes, problem-solving and other skills.
Kids also learn early coding skills as they direct the Kinderbot to move in different directions. And they can “repair” their little learning robot with his tools.
The nice thing about this learning toy is it has different modes, some more challenging than others, so preschoolers can learn at whatever pace is comfortable for them.
This is a fabulous toy for 3-year old and 4-year-old boys and girls that will keep them entertained and challenged in their pre-K years.

Fisher-Price Wonder Makers Campground
Wonder Makers Campground

Fisher-Price released a line of building and pretend play toys called Wonder Makers and I just LOVE these! They are simple building sets designed for preschoolers and all the sets can interconnect with one another.
I love that they help preschoolers develop their dexterity and problem-solving skills as they put the sets together and they have lots of textures to make the play experience more stimulating.
The Soft Slumber Campground set is my favorite, but the Slide & Ride Schoolyard is adorable too, with loads of fun activities like swings, a slide and a school bus.
A Wonder Makers set is an awesome gift for a 3-year-old boy or girl!

Stamp ‘n Top Pizza Oven

When my niece and nephew were preschool-aged, they adored playing with Play-Doh sets. It kept them busy for hours. A still popular set with boys and girls both is the Stamp ‘n Top Pizza Oven .
This set comes with everything your little amore’s need to create Italian masterpieces, including fun little topping shapes and a pizza cutter.
My favorite feature is the cheese crank so they can create the perfect amount of mozzarella topping.

Play Tent With Tunnel
Play Tent with Tunnel

Play tents offer a whole realm of imaginative play for preschoolers while also providing them a quiet place to read or play. Which is great for moms and dads trying to work from home.
The Kiddey Play Tent and Tunnel is colorful and appealing and just the right size for 3 and 4-year-olds to play in. It can be used indoors or out and the pieces work either together or separate.
It sets up with just a twist, and folds up small too. This tent set does not come with balls, but here’s a good deal on 200 plastic balls for it. A play tent is a super versatile toy for a preschool-aged boy or girl!

Imaginext Jurassic World T-Rex
Jurassic World T-Rex

In case you haven’t noticed, ginormous playsets have been top toys for preschool boys in recent years. Seriously. The bigger, the better. And the Imaginext toy line by Fisher-Price makes the most popular ginormous playsets for preschoolers of them all!
Take a look at their hit release last year, the Imaginext Jurassic World T-Rex. This thing absolutely thrills preschool-aged dinosaur lovers! What could be better than controlling your very own T-Rex as she chases her dinner and chomps on cars?
It’s still getting great reviews and is an awesome gift for a 3-year-old boy who loves dinosaurs!

Furreal Mighty Roar Simba
Mighty Roar Simba

The Furreal interactive pets are always big hits with preschool-aged boys and girls. The Mighty Roar Simba toy is a adorable and is still a hit with preschoolers!
Little Simba has over 100 sound and motion combinations and the most expressive lion-eyes you’ve ever seen. He just can’t hide his lion eyes. (Sorry, couldn’t help it.)
The cutest thing about Simba is that he’ll roar back to you and munch on his stick of grubs when he’s hungry. He’s a nice gift for a 4-year-old boy who loves The Lion King!

Fisher-Price Think & Learn Rocktopus
Think & Learn Rocktopus

Moving on to a slightly more cerebral toy, Fisher-Prices’s Think & Learn Rocktopus won The Toy of The Year Award for 2019. This toy teaches music appreciation and math, using lights, sounds, and a not-too-annoying voice that says things like “Can you dig it?!”
It’s cool because kids learn what the different instruments sound like and how they change the whole flow of a song. Who knows, this toy may help you find out if you have a young composer on your hands!
Another fun feature is you can download an app that will create videos to go along with your preschooler’s musical creation. It’s been out a year, but it still makes our list of the best toys for preschool boys and would be a great gift for a 3-year-old boy or girl!

PAW Patrol Super Paws Mighty Lookout Tower
Super Paws Lookout Tower

A not new but much-loved PAW Patrol toy is the Super Paws Mighty Lookout Tower. This thing is PAWS-atively amazing!
It’s nearly 3 feet tall so there’s plenty of room for multiple kids to play. And LOTS of activities to keep little ones busy. There’s lights, sounds, an elevator, a zipline so the pups can get to their vehicles quickly, and 6 bays for their rescue vehicles to fly out of.
I mean, what more could a Paw Patrol fan want? The set comes with one vehicle and a Chase character, but the other vehicles are available separately and pretty reasonably priced.

In vehicle mode, the remote controls the car forward, back, left and right AND spins it in circles! COOL!
With the lights and sounds and all the action, this will keep preschoolers entertained for sure. It’s one of my favorite toy releases for preschool-aged boys this year!

Melissa & Doug Tabletop Easel
Tabletop Easel

Preschool boys need a little quiet time sometimes (and so do mom and dad!) and the Melissa & Doug Tabletop Easel is the perfect toy for those times.
It’s a 3-in-1 easel, with a chalkboard, magnetic whiteboard, and paper roll, so preschoolers get a variety of ways to express that creativity. It comes with magnetic letters too, so they can learn words and spelling and start working on their Kindergarten skills.
Parents love that this folds right up and tucks away, so it’s a great gift for a family that doesn’t have a lot of space.
These foam magnets work well with the magnetic board to give preschoolers even more ways to use it. For the price, this is a great Christmas gift for a preschool boy that his parents will thank you for.

The award-winning PlasmaCar has been around several years now, but is still getting almost perfect ratings from kids and parents.

Budding photographers don’t have to wait until they’re old enough for a cell phone to practice their photography skills. The VTech Kidizoom Duo Camera is extra durable and easy to use for preschoolers.
When you give a 3 or 4-year-old a camera, they look a little closer at the world around them to see what they can capture. It inspires creativity as they try different angles to get just the right shot of their toy, sibling, or best friend. And parents get lots of memories captured on film, from their child’s perspective.
The Duo works in front facing and selfie mode and records video too. It also has fun photo effects and even some games.

This year, their latest addition is the Get Well Doctor Activity Center. It features a patient exam bench, a doctor’s seat and a sink and storage area for the nurse. So yeah, it’s plenty big enough for multiple kids to play together.
What a fun way to teach young ones what happens at the doctor’s office and allay any fears. Plus, it just might set your preschooler on the path of a healthcare career – you never know!

Tasty Jr. Bake ‘N Share Kitchen

Speaking of pretend play – kitchen playsets are always popular with preschool-aged boys and girls. Brand new from Little Tikes comes the Tasty Jr. Bake ‘N Share kitchen playset.
Two things I really like about this play kitchen – one is that it comes with over 40 accessories right out of the box, so you don’t have to buy those separately (although they have more accessory sets available if you want more variety).
The second thing is that the height is adjustable as your child grows. Just push the two side pieces together and the counter is raised up to fit older kids – so convenient!
The “share” feature is pretty neat too – there’s a cellphone holder built-in so you can capture and share those adorable moments when your kids are playing nicely together!
